چکیده

Overlay networks are becoming a popular vehicle for deploying advanced network services in the Internet. Overlay networks are implemented by deploying service nodes at suitably chosen sites in the network. Service nodes communicate with users through the commodity Internet, while among themselves, they may use either the commodity Internet or dedicated channels. The number of distinct service nodes has a big in¤uence on the operational cost of an overlay network; meanwhile, the distance between service nodes and end users has a big in¤uence on the quality of the service. In this paper, we study the problem of how to optimally place service nodes in a network, balancing the need to minimize the number of nodes, while limiting the distance between users and service nodes. We show that the design problem is NP-hard and study the performance of heuristic algorithms using simulation. For single domain, our algorithms produce results that are within a few percent of an easily computed lower bound. For multi-domain networks, the performance ranges from close to the optimal to roughly twice the optimal.

Optimal Content Location in IP Multicast Based Overlay Networks

The architecture of overlay networks should encourage high-performance, high-scalability and reduced costs. This becomes more crucial when communication, storage costs as well as service latencies grow with the exploding amounts of data exchanged and with the size and span of the overlay network. For that end, multicast methodologies can be used to deliver content from regional servers to end u...

Proxy Location Problems and Their Generalizations

In this paper, we suggest a new angle to look on proxy location problems. We view the proxy as a service and generalize the problem of optimally placing proxies to optimally placing any service in the network. We differentiate between two cases: transparent services, such as transparent caches (TERCs), and non-transparent services where the end stations, such as hosts using a cache, need to be ...

Content Location and Distribution in Converged Overlay Networks

A major challenge for organizations and application service providers (ASP) is to provide high quality network services to geographically dispersed consumers at a reasonable cost. Such providers employ content delivery networks (CDNs) and overlay networks to bring content and applications closer to their service consumers with better quality. Overlay networks architecture should support high-pe...

A Performance Evaluation of Connectionless Overlay Networks for ATM

Introducing the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) causes a backwards compatibility problem, because ATM is connection-oriented whereas most of today’s LANs are connectionless. Interconnection can be achieved by the use of connectionless servers (CLS). These servers together with a number of preestablished virtual circuits form a connectionless overlay network on top of ATM. In this paper we eval...

Towards strategic bandwidth sharing in overlay multicast networks based on mechanism design theory

The selfish behavior of the users in the overlay multicast networks can lead to degradation of the performance. In this paper, we target the mechanism design for the overlay networks based on the monopoly auction economies. In our proposed auction mechanism, the bandwidth of the service offered by the origin servers can be thought of as commodity. In this auction, the sellers are either the ori...
